AFT 1493 Email Newsletter
May 20, 2004

Dear Colleagues,

Here's some timely news and a few updates from your union:

Campus forums upcoming in the Fall

We will be holding meetings at all three colleges at the beginning of the Fall semester to provide an update on the status of negotiations at that time, and to discuss the dues restructuring proposal that was the subject of a front page article in the May issue of The Advocate. We hope to see you at the meeting on your campus.

The status of the 3 college bookstores

The District Bookstore Committee decided at its meeting on May 6 that it was the consensus of this body to recommend to the Chancellor that the three college bookstores in the District remain independent and not be outsourced to Follett or Barnes and Noble as was being considered. This decision was discussed by the District Shared Governance Council at its May 17 meeting. All of the constituencies involved in making this decision agreed that the bookstores need to be improved, but not leased to an outside corporation.  A Bookstore Committee will continue to work with the District and the bookstore managers to ensure that faculty and student concerns are addressed as the bookstores work through changes that need to be made.

The AFT Local 1493 union election currently underway

The AFT Local 1493 Election Ballot for 2004-2006 went out in campus mail on May 13. If you are a member of AFT Local 1493, you should receive a ballot. If you haven't received one, please call the AFT office at x6491. The ballots need to be received in the AFT office at CSM (15-131) by Tuesday, June 1, 2004.

The 2.41% COLA in the May revise that came out on May 13

In the May revise that just came out, we are glad to announce that the Governor has increased the cost of living adjustment (COLA) for community college faculty from the initial 1.83% to 2.41%. This gives AFT negotiators a little bit more money to work with in the upcoming round of negotiations. Unfortunately student fees are still being projected at $26 a unit and $50 a unit for B.A. holders.

The status of AFT negotiations

We continue in our efforts to meet with the District to set up a schedule for negotiating sessions. AFT is willing to negotiate over the summer break, but no decision on this has been made yet. Hopefully, the next round of negotiations can be concluded by the middle of the Fall semester.

Baseball anyone?

Are you interested in going to a ball game with some of your colleagues? AFT is organizing a Friday evening outing to watch the San Francisco Giants. We are planning this social event for the beginning of the Fall semester, at the end of August or the start of September. If you are interested in buying a ticket (s) and watching a baseball game with your colleagues, please call the AFT office (x6491) to express your interest in attending! We need to have a sense of how many tickets to order. Let's have some fun together at the start of the new semester!

CFT scholarships for continuing college students may still be applied for until July 1, 2004!

These scholarships are available to undergraduate continuing college students who are children or dependents of CFT members in good standing, or children of deceased CFT members. Scholarships are available to students attending community colleges, four-year colleges or universities, and trade, technical or art schools. The award grants for the 2004-05 academic year will be a maximum of $1000 for students attending two-year schools and $3000 for those attending four-year colleges. Applications may be obtained at: www.cft.org

Union  Retreat in  August

Those of you interested in being involved, or at the very least informed,  about the work of your union over the next academic year and beyond, contact Dan at the AFT office to reserve a seat at our annual retreat -- normally held a day or two before Opening Day.
