AFT 1493 E-News – September 15, 2006
Dear
faculty colleagues,
In order to
keep you informed with the latest information as we receive it, we want to
update you on the following issues:
·
retroactive
pay checks
·
part-time
salary schedules
·
health
concerns at CSM and Skyline
·
paper
or electronic versions of the contract?
·
deadline to reserve your Teatro Campesino tickets
RETRO CHECKS
Kathy
Blackwood, the District’s Chief Financial Officer, has informed AFT that, now
that the Board of Trustees has ratified the AFT agreement, the implementation
of the agreement is being worked out. The salary schedules for AFT members will
be updated and you will see the new rates in September’s paychecks. The
retro pay for July 2005 - August 2006 will be in a separate check paid at the
end of November.
PART-TIME
OFFICE HOURS AND SALARY SCHEDULES
The
District is still working on the details of precisely how they are going to
implement the part-time faculty office hours program, but what is known for
sure is that paid office hours for part-time faculty is effective with the
beginning of the Fall 2006 semester and the District understands that they will
need to process a retro check to all part-time faculty members as soon as they
work out the implementation of the part-time office hours program in their new
payroll system.
Also, AFT
has found that the new 2006-2007 adjunct faculty salary schedule that has been
posted by the District is not the correct schedule for teaching faculty. The
posted ‘06-‘07 adjunct pay rates reflect the 4.92% increase and will apply only
to non-teaching counselors, librarians & counselors who do not hold office
hours. Based on the new AFT contract, there will be two additional
salary schedules for 2006 which will apply to teaching faculty--one schedule
for teaching hours (lecture & lab rates, which will have a 5.78% reduction)
and another for office hours (which will be 82.6% of the special rate for this
year only). These two schedules will be posted (and available on the AFT 1493
website- http://aft1493.org)
next week.
HEALTH
AND SAFETY UPDATE
On
September 7, Charlene Frontiera, the CSM Dean of Math/Science, wrote an email
concerning the outcomes of a meeting that was held with faculty who teach in
Building 36 the day before. She wrote the following:
“1.
Hygro-thermometers will be placed throughout the building so we can start
recording humidity and temp. This will help the engineers understand what
is happening in the different parts of the building.
“2. There
will be environmental testing in different parts of the building and some folks
will be asked to wear dosimeters.
“3. Diane
Martinez is going to organize a deep cleaning of the building.
“The building
was cleaned before we moved in and again before the Thursday evening college
consortium event. However, Diane Martinez would like to see a really deep
and thorough cleaning of the whole building.
“I am open to suggestions about which rooms/zones you would like to have
assayed.”
AFT has
also been informed that OSHA was to visit CSM sometime over the course of this
week. We will let you know when we know more about the results of this visit.
Skyline
President Victoria Morrow provided the following update on Skyline’s health
concerns in today’s Skyline Shines email message:
“An
epidemiologist at the Northern California Cancer Center (NCCC) will be sending
Harry Joel, Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, a report based on the three
instances of tumors at Skyline. As soon as the district receives the NCCC
report, it will be made available. Last Tuesday air quality testing was done
and we are waiting for the results. Mike Williamson will be meeting on
September 22nd with an Industrial Hygienist who has a PhD in
Chemistry, and with an attorney specializing in environmental issues. They will
be visiting the site to obtain more information. Harry estimates that the
investigation may be concluded within two weeks.”
FACULTY
POLL: PAPER OR ELECTRONIC CONTRACTS?
Now that
the new AFT contract has been ratified by faculty and approved by the Board of
Trustees, it is time to print a new copy of the AFT contract to distribute to
all faculty. AFT would like to poll faculty about whether or not they would
like to receive a paper copy of the contract for reference purposes. Or would
having access to an electronic copy be sufficient? We will order paper copies only for those faculty who request them.
Please respond by answering our quick online poll at: http://smcwebtest.smccd.net/accounts/brenner/printcontract.tp4
